On July 10th, the Centre for Rural development in Central Vietnam (CRD) in collaboration with Women’s Union, Youth Union and Child Lovers Club of An My ward organized a thematic activity on “Prevention of Physical and Humiliating Punishment on Children” in An My ward, Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province.

The thematic activity aimed to raise awareness among parents in the commune about ending physical and humiliating punishment on children and also create an open space for the community to exchange and share methods of educating children in family, thereby promote practice of positive discipline so that children can live in a safe and loving environment.

In this thematic activity, through the skit “My dream” by members of Child Lovers Club of An My ward, participants discussed and shared their views on messages through the skit. There were many questions and opinions raised in the activity. Outstanding issues such as handling capacity of authorities, provisions of the law and recognizing signs of child abuse were also discussed.

After discussion, participants posed some challenging questions about child life, child abuse and physical and humiliating punishment on children. Many issues were presented including how to distinguish between violence and abuse which attracted great interest of participants. By this way, participants suggested the most effective methods to minimize physical and humiliating punishment on children.

Joining the activity, Mr. Trinh Luong Quy, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of An My ward emphasized: “The activity is an extremely useful and urgent to limit physical and humiliating punishment on children, thereby raises awareness of parents so that this situation no longer exists in the locality in particular and the whole society in general. Hopefully, more activities like this will be held in communities.”

The activity was within the project “Strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations on child rights governance” coordinated by CRD and funded by Save the Children in Vietnam.
