From late April to early May, the project “Associated agriculture for long-term income stabilization of ethnic minorities and equal integration in community development in Vietnam” (BMZ project) organized training course on “Advanced veterinary medicine” for veterinary staff at levels in Nam Giang district. The Center for Rural Development in Central Vietnam in cooperation with the Agricultural Technology Centre of Nam Giang district conducted this activity.
Overview of a training class in Nam Giang district (session 2)
The training course aims to improve knowledge and skills of district and communal veterinary staff on symptoms, treatments and preventative measures for the most common diseases in breeding pigs, buffaloes and cows. Through the training, trainees have right qualifications to provide veterinary services to local community, especially 600 black pig-raising households who are direct beneficiaries of the project.
For this purpose, 25 trainees from 5 beneficiary communes and town (Cà Dy, Tà Bhing, Tà Pơơ, Chà Vàl communes and Thạnh Mỹ town) were selected for the training. The training course was implemented for 9 days and divided into 3 sessions with different topics.
Trainers provided useful contents to trainees such as: communication skills and training method for trainees at old ages and ethnic minority trainees; skills on using veterinary equipment ; Identification of veterinary drugs and how to put drugs into animals’ body; using disinfectants and disinfecting cages; pig infectious diseases; pig disease identification and diagnosis; pig internal diseases: white scours in piglets; diarrhoea and dehydration in pigs; parasites of pigs; reproductive failure in pigs and other diseases.
The learner-centered approach and combination between theory and practice has increased the efficiency of the training course. Apart from learning theory, trainees took part in practical sessions to understand theory and practice disease diagnosis, disinfection spraying, wound suturing, putting on a cast, infusion, etc.

End of advanced veterinary training course – session 1
average results of the tests, 15 trainees who got the average mark above 8.5, are qualified to provide veterinary service at locality. These trainees were also equipped with veterinary instrument sets and they can join the project as collaborators on animal husbandry to help 600 beneficiary households in raising black pigs.
This activity is within the project “Associated agriculture for long-term income stabilization of ethnic minorities and equal integration in community development in Vietnam” funded by The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and World Vision Deutschland (WVD). The Center for Rural Development in Central Vietnam and World Vision Vietnam coordinate to implement the project with the target “Improving the livelihood of local farmers through developing black pig value chains and enhancing the participation of ethnic minority communities in the project”. The project is estimated to be implemented from November 2019 to September 2022./.
